The IRC’s Airbel Impact Lab designs, tests, and scales life-changing, cost-effective solutions for people affected by conflict and disaster. By applying the IRC’s deep technical expertise and field experience with a range of skills from the behavioral sciences, human-centered design, rigorous research, and multi-disciplinary problem-solving in humanitarian contexts, we work to develop breakthrough solutions that combine creativity and rigor, openness and expertise, and a desire to think afresh with the experience of a large-scale implementing organization.
The Design Researcher will work on a new education within the Airbel Impact Lab called “Autonomous Learning for Remedial Education”. Autonomous Learning for Remedial Education is a school-based digital learning program where children learn on child-friendly educational software called onetab and Kitkit School. The program aims to reach 1,800 children in standards 1-3 in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp and Makere host community in Kigoma, Tanzania. Three centers will host 6 sessions a day with 50 children in each session. Imagine Worldwide and The International Rescue Committee (IRC) along with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) plan to conduct implementation pilots followed by mixed-methods experimental studies to determine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the program.
The Design Researcher will work closely with an experienced Designer from the Airbel Impact Lab to design, test, and adapt staff support assets and a plan for delivering these assets to the IRC staff before the launch of the pilot in February, 2021.
Major Responsibilities
Major Responsibilities will include:
Preparation: 3 days
Develop detailed research plan in concert with the team
Field Work: 12 days (Monday Week 1 through Friday Week 2, including weekends)
Design, test, and adapt staff support assets for the program and a plan for delivering these assets to the IRC staff.
Conduct interviews, focus group discussions, workshops and tests with the IRC staff / community and school stakeholders to get input on staff support assets and better understand how they should be delivered to IRC staff.
Share synthesis notes from interviews and focus group discussions and document workshop / test activities and outcomes (activity description, objective, participants, and learnings / decisions).
Build insights from design activities and share for review and input from the team during the design sprint
Wrap- Up / Reporting: 3 days
Finalize staff support resources
Summarize program design and plans in a final deck. The final deck should include a plan for delivering staff support resources to IRC staff.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies: Curious. Enjoys learning new things. Creative. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Self-driven.
Team work: Able to work with remote, multicultural, and multi-disciplinary teams
Language Skills: Native Swahili speaker, Fluent English speaker
Technical experience: Knowledge of Microsoft Office and G Suite
Appreciated
Education: Bachelor’s degree in field related to human-centered design, design research, marketing, qualitative research, qualitative data management and analysis
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies: Demonstrated experience (3-5 years) collecting, managing and analyzing qualitative data, ideally in resource limited settings.
Technical Expertise: Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Graphic design and illustration skills
Sector Experience: Experience working in development and/or humanitarian sector
Working Environment: Field office and implementation sites

- Engagement: Community sensitization; Community / School Engagement; Student Engagement
- Facilities / Set-up: Use of space; Device storage; Device Security; Device Charging
- Software: Installation / Set-up; Registration; General Usage; Troubleshooting; Data extraction; Dashboard usage
- Hardware: Device usage; Accessories usage (headphones, etc.); Troubleshooting
- Implementation: Implementation model; Timetable design; Role / capabilities of facilitators; Teacher / facilitator training
- Monitoring: Protocol; Processes; Reporting
